What an Obstructed Airway Means for Your Child
Did you know that the shift in human lifestyle over the past few hundred years has led to our jaws shrinking? Our ancestors lived and ate differently, so their jaws were bigger and had more room. Fast-forward to today, and we are seeing the consequences of smaller jaws: crowded teeth, insufficient room for wisdom teeth, and, most critically, reduced airway space. This single factor is at the heart of breathing difficulties and sleep disorders affecting a wide range of people, from young children to adults.
An estimated 53% of the American population has “malocclusion,” a condition characterized by misalignment of teeth, crowding of the tongue, a narrower jaw, and a slender airway.
At Dental Sleep Studio, our experienced dentists target these issues with airway-expanding treatments so you and your loved ones can breathe easier, sleep better, and live healthier. Get ready to reclaim your well-being; give us a call today.
Airway Health Starts with the Trifecta:
Myofunctional Therapy
Tongue Tie
Airway Aligners

This is not speech therapy! It’s “physical therapy” – speech becomes a symptom after the issues addressed by myofunctional therapy have been established. Training the lips, tongue, and cheek helps control the muscles to create valuable space!
Myofunctional guides use built-in myofunctional pillars to encourage lip closure, proper tongue positioning, and nasal breathing. These guides are used as little as 10 minutes daily, delivering big results!
You know it’s working if your child’s lips are closed and breathing through the nose
Train the muscles first! By doing that first, we will create room for the tongue and teeth to prevent airway obstructions.

Give your kids the ability to have full and proper tongue function! Releasing the tongue and engaging the natural elasticity of the tongue enables proper eating, swallowing, and speech function.
Does this sound like your infant?
- Inability to breastfeed
- Painful breastfeeding for the mother
- Failure to Thrive
- Sleep deprivation
- Intolerant to solid foods
Does this sound like your child?
- Inability to chew age-appropriate foods
- Persistent gagging, choking, and vomiting
- Speech delay
- Dental hygiene and early onset dental complications
In addition to the functional symptoms, tongue tie is key in jaw and palate development! An inability to move the tongue naturally and freely often results in a collapsed palate, narrow jaw, and obstructed airway!

We can help provide your child with room for an open airway through the use of aligners!
Aligners are traditionally used as an orthodontic solution for beautiful, full smiles, but the principles that allow for those full smiles are the same that keep airways open. By reducing crowding in the mouth and expanding the jaw and palate through gentle pressure, not only will the structure of the face change, but the room for oxygen expands.
Treatment with preventative aligners can improve airflow by up to 20% in moderate cases, giving your child more oxygen to get restorative and restful sleep!
Increased oxygen and restful sleep means better performance in school, better growth and development, and increased brain development.

We Help Kids Thrive!
Dental Sleep Studio focuses on delivering more conservative and less invasive solutions when it comes to treating children. Up to 15% of kids are unable to breathe properly due to a compromised airway. This includes problems with sleep apnea, yet many of these cases slip through the cracks unnoticed.
Our airway team encourages early preventive dental visits for children to ensure their teeth grow correctly and they maintain proper oral posture. Starting that trust-building journey with them as young as four can be extremely valuable when seeking treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Your Child Have a Crossbite?
This happens when the upper jaw is not wide enough for a snug fit with the lower jaw, which can cause some lower teeth to bite outside the upper teeth.
Does Your Child Have Crowded Teeth?
This is when there is insufficient space in the jaw for all the still-growing adult teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that kids should be evaluated by an orthodontist by the time they are 7 to identify crowding early on. This is to minimize the need for pulling teeth later.
Does Your Child Have Blocked Teeth?
Sometimes, a tooth cannot come in because other teeth are in the way. We call this an “impacted tooth,” which is quite common with canine (eye) teeth.
All these issues can be effectively treated with our palate expanders. A palate expander not only fixes the crossbite, crowding, and impacted teeth but can also help with underbites and sleep-disordered breathing (including sleep apnea). This treatment can change how your child’s face looks, reduce jaw pain, and eliminate TMJ disorders. Most importantly, it gives them a broader, more open smile that can transform the entire face.
We recommend palate expansion for kids because their dental structures can easily adjust to changes, but in some cases, they also work well for our adult patients.
